How will the right answer fit in terms of support and conclusion?

Only the right answer will use the same kind of support and the same kind of conclusion that the passage uses.

Highlight the main conclusion in the passage, if there is one:

if you want a large refund, you should use a tax preparation service.

[SUPPORT]. So [CONCLUSION].

It’s a nice catch if you recognize that the support is a comparison, especially since all five answers match the “If…, you should…” form of the conclusion.

Map the wording of the answers to the wording of the passage:

(A) …generally have higher incomes than…

This all maps. The support makes a similar comparison. And it says “generally”, which maps to “the average” used in the passage. Then it shifts to “a high income” overall, just like “a large refund” in the passage.

(B) …So if your company produces publications…

Nope. The support could sort of work like the comparison in the passage. But the condition in the passage was about getting “a large refund”, the benefit described in the support. Here the benefit is “more efficiently”, but that gets left out of the condition here.

(C) …and will also decrease…

Nope. This support isn’t making a comparison.

(D) …usually find it helpful

This support isn’t making a comparison either. Out.

(E) …target people who have purchased from telemarketers in the past…

Round three. This support isn’t making a comparison.

(A) is the correct answer.

Common pattern/s in this question: I think you’ll agree the process of elimination goes a lot faster if you know you’re looking for support that makes a comparison.
