Prompt: Each of the following, if true, contributes to an explanation…
Difficulty: ππππ
How will the right answer fit in terms of support and conclusion?
Only the right answer will not support an explanation of the research results.
Highlight the main conclusion in the passage, if there is one:
I try to be really consistent, and technicallyyy, there’s no conclusion in this passage. Buuut, I could totally support the decision to highlight from “compared to sensitizers…” to the end. The wrong answers will all basically act like support for that statement, so it could be helpful, even though the author states it like a fact.
[BACKGROUND]. The researcher found that, [BACKGROUND].
Everybody’s catching that the passage is making a comparison, right? The phrase “repressors were less…” is a dead give away. It’s really useful to pick this up, since all the explanations in the wrong answers will map to this same comparison.
Map the wording of the answers to the wording of the passage:
(A) …better able than sensitizers to focus on their work…
That definitely explains how they get “higher grades”.
(B) …less apt than sensitizers to alienate people…
It’s reasonable to say this explains the “superior social skills” thing.
(C) …reward repressors more than they reward sensitizers…
That explains pretty much everything in the researcher’s list.
(D) …strengthens repressors’ tendency…
This is the only one that doesn’t make the same comparison between sensitizers and repressors. Winner!
(E) …to focus more than repressors do on the difficulties…
Yah, that’ll hold ya back. This explains why they’d be “anxious” and end up with lower grades.
(D) is the correct answer.
